
Fiona Bates: BA (Speech & Hearing Therapy) . Wits 1996 - MRCSLT .MASLTIP HPC
Fiona is a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with an extensive range of experience in child speech and language development.
She completed her degree at Wits University in 1996. Since graduating she has worked in a variety of settings across South Africa, Scotland and England – and so brings experience from early years, mainstream, special schools and independent practice.
She is the author and co-author of a series of 6 “Language Resource Packs” promoting speaking and listening groups within schools. The project was a 2006 BT School Award winner!
Fiona treats childhood speech, language and social communication difficulties:
Language delays or disorders, including complex needs such as Specific Language Impairment, Developmental Dyspraxia, Selective Mutism and Autism.
Fiona is trained in the use of Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) – for children with complex needs such as Autistic Spectrum Disorder
Social communication difficulties
Speech sound difficulties – Fiona has a special interest in Verbal Dyspraxia and is trained in PROMPT (Prompts for Reprogramming Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets – see www.promptinstitute.com)
Speech & Auditory processing (including phonological awareness difficulties for speech and literacy development)
Stammering - Fiona is Lidcombe trained but also works with older children and teenagers who stammer
Feeding and swallowing difficulties including tongue thrust.
