Speech and Language Therapy

Speech therapist and childChildren with a language delay are often noticed at nursery age when they cannot express themselves as well as their peers. This can be due to a mild delay in learning vocabulary or a more long term difficulty such as Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Speech and language therapy is offered on an individual basis or within small groups, and can take place in clinic, at school/ nursery or at home.  Parental input is always encouraged, and your therapist can produce a home therapy pack for you to work on together at home.

Children come to us with a range of communication problems, including:

Our speech and language therapists are trained in the latest techniques and offer the following specialist services:

  • Lidcombe-trained therapists who work with children who stammer. Parents are trained to measure the stutter and carry out the therapy between clinic visits, with monitoring and support from the therapist.
  • The Nuffield Dyspraxia therapy approach (NDP3) for verbal dyspraxia. This uses pictures of sounds and words to give visual support as the child learns.
  • PROMPT – also for children with verbal dyspraxia.  PROMPT stands for Physical Reprogramming of the Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets and is a hands-on therapy to help the child learn to coordinate the sounds in words.
  • Hanen Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for children who are late to develop their communication skills.
  • Hanen Parent Training Courses – a programme of classes and home visits for parents of children with delayed language.
  • Elklan Tutors. We offer training and communications for nursery and school staff working with children who have a variety of communication needs.
  • The Picture Exchange Communication System – a visual system of communication for children and adults who are non-verbal.
